Swimming Lessons

Powers Park Summer Season 2023

June 19 - August 11

Powers Park offers Red Cross Levels PK-6 certified swimming lessons for children ages 4 and over in group lessons. We follow American Red Cross guidelines.
 
The 8 week program is designed to increase skills over time. Lessons occur each weekday for 30 minutes at a selected time of your choice based on availability at registration.  
 
Each student will be placed in his/her level depending on his/her own swimming ability. Children are assessed based on ability, experience and participation in the program.

Must be able to complete level before moving to the next

Kiddie Pool

Submerge the entire face underwater. Be comfortable in water.   CHILD MUST BE POTTY TRAINED TO ENROLL

 

Level 1

Opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects. Front float. Back float. Roll from back to front. Roll from front to back. Swim on front at least 2 body lengths. Swim on back at least 2 body lengths.

 

Level 2

Opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects. Front float. Back float. Roll from back to front. Roll from front to back. Treading at least 15 seconds. Swim on the front rope. Swim on back to rope.

Level 3

Standing dive. Rotary breathing. Survival float for at least 30 seconds. Back float at least 30 seconds. Tread water for 300 seconds. Front crawl to the rope. Elementary backstroke to the rope. Scissors kick to the rope.

 

Level 4

Standing Dive. Feet first surface dive, submerging completely. Survival swimming at least 30 seconds. Front crawl open turn. Backstroke open turn. Tread water using 2 different kicks for 2 minutes. Front crawl at least 25 yards. Breaststroke a least 15 yards. Butterfly at least 15 yards. Elementary backstroke at least 25 yards. Back crawl at least 15 yards. Side stroke at least 15 yards.

 

Level 5

Shallow dive. Tuck surface dive. Pike surface dive. Front flip turns while swimming. Backstroke flip turn while swimming. Tread water at least 5 minutes. Front crawl at least 50 yards. Breaststroke at least 25 yards. Butterfly at least 25 yards. Elementary backstroke at least 50 yards. Back crawl at least 25 yards. Sidestroke at least 25 yards.

 

Level 6

Dive off board. Front crawl at least 100 yards. Elementary backstroke at least 100 yards. Back crawl at least 50 yards. Breaststroke at least 50 yards. Sidestroke at least 50 yards. Butterfly at least 50 yards. Front crawl open turn. Backstroke open turn. Front flip turn. Backstroke flip turn. Sidestroke turn. Butterfly turn. Breaststroke turn. Feet first surface dive. Tuck surface dive. Pike surface dive. Back float at least 5 minutes. Treading water, Kicking only (no hands) for 2 minutes. Surface dive and retrieve an object from bottom at 12 feet deep.

 

JR Guard requirements:

Must be 11- 14 years old

This class is a defined course with a set lesson plan that includes developing your swimming skills and practicing in-water rescues. An introduction on first aid, CPR, and AED knowledge and skills is provided.

Prerequisites:

Must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

● Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or the side ● Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards continuously while using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.

Must be able to complete the following Water Competency Sequence: 1. Step into the water from the side and totally submerge

2. Maintain position for one minute by treading water or floating (or a combination of the two)

3. Rotate one full turn and orient to the exit

4. Level off and swim on the front or back 25 yards

5. Exit without using a ladder or steps
